Starling statements already look like a ledger — but if you've been handed one as a PDF (for a mortgage application or audit), you still need it as data. The converter turns it back into spreadsheet rows with the balance chain verified.

  • Verified against the balance

Every row is reconciled against the statement's running balance, so a misread digit is flagged, not silently wrong.

  • Encrypted, then deleted

Your file is processed over an encrypted connection and the original PDF is deleted the moment conversion finishes.

  • QuickBooks & Xero ready

Export import-ready QuickBooks (QBO) and Xero files with stable IDs, alongside Excel, CSV, and JSON.

How to convert a Starling statement

  1. 1

    Upload your statement

Drag the Starling PDF into the converter above, or browse to it. Scans, phone photos, and password-protected files all work.

  2. 2

    AI reads every transaction

Dates, descriptions, and amounts are extracted page by page, then cross-checked against the statement's running balance.

  3. 3

    Review and download

Anything that doesn't reconcile is flagged for a quick fix, then you export to Excel, CSV, QuickBooks, Xero, or JSON.

How to download your Starling statement

  1. Open the Starling app and select the account (Personal, Joint, Business, or Euro).
  2. Tap the account balance, then “Statements”.
  3. Choose the month or a custom date range.
  4. Download the PDF (or export a CSV) and share it to yourself; the web portal offers the same.

Starling statement formats and where they trip up converters

Starling current account

A tidy statement with a running balance on every line; the wrinkles are Spaces transfers and multiple linked accounts in one PDF.

Synthetic example — not a real statement

TRANSACTIONS

Salary — Acme Ltd+2,400.00
Faster Payment — Rent, ref FLAT12-950.00
Transfer to Holiday Space-150.00
Card — Pret A Manger-6.40

Starling prints a running balance on every line, and Spaces show as transfers.

  • Starling statements are already clean, but Spaces (sub-savings) transfers appear in the main list, so a naive export counts money moved into savings as spending.

Spaces movements are labelled as transfers and kept out of income and expense totals, while the running balance still reconciles.

  • Faster Payments and standing orders carry references and counterparty names that wrap or merge with the amount.

The reference and payee are preserved in the description while the amount is extracted cleanly.

  • A single PDF can include the personal account alongside a linked Euro or Business account.

Each account is detected on its own with its balance chain kept separate, exported as its own worksheet.

What the export looks like

Every row rebuilt in date order and checked against the running balance. A green check means it reconciles; an amber flag means it needs a quick look before export.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a Starling statement to Excel?

In the Starling app, open the account, go to Statements, pick a period, and download the PDF (or CSV). Drop it into the converter above and download the result as Excel, CSV, QuickBooks, Xero, or JSON. Your first page each day is free, no account needed.

Starling statements already have a running balance. What does the converter add?

It turns the PDF back into real spreadsheet rows and checks each line against that printed running balance, so a scan or a lender's PDF becomes verified data you can sort, filter, and import — not just a picture of a ledger.

How are Spaces transfers handled?

As transfers. Money moved to and from Spaces (Starling's sub-savings) is labelled rather than treated as spending, so your income and expense totals aren't distorted.

My PDF includes my personal and Euro accounts together. Will they stay separate?

Yes. When one PDF covers linked accounts, each is detected on its own and kept as a separate balance chain, then exported as its own worksheet.

Does it work with Starling Business statements?

Yes. Business account statements use the same clean layout with a running balance; references and Spaces transfers are handled the same way.

Can I import a converted Starling statement into QuickBooks or Xero?

Yes. Alongside Excel and CSV, the converter exports QuickBooks (QBO) and Xero files with stable transaction IDs, so re-importing an updated statement won't create duplicates.
